FIGHTING CELLULITE
INSIDE AND OUT

(NC)—With the arrival of hot weather just around the corner, women will be looking towards sporting a lighter wardrobe and slipping into shorts, swimsuits and form fitting dresses. While warmer weather can brighten spirits, individuals with cellulite may dread the seasonal highs. Research indicates more than 70 per cent of females have cellulite — men, however rarely have cellulite as their fat tissue is structured and stored differently.

Normal body fat is different than cellulite — everyone has a smooth layer of body fat just beneath the skin. This body fat acts as an insulator, cushions organs, muscles and nerves and serves as an energy reserve. When the system is working well, waste products are removed and a smooth appearance results.

Cellulite is lumpy and occurs most commonly on thighs, buttocks and hips. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not related to obesity, it occurs in overweight, average and thin women. This cosmetic condition causes the skin surface to have the appearance of an orange peel or cottage cheese. A fibrous strand of connective tissue joins fat cells to one another. As cells increase in size the connective tissue remains stationary forcing swollen cells toward the surface causing dimpling skin. Normal fat cells turn to cellulite when the body is out of balance due to stress, poor circulation and oxygenation or dehydration causing fats, fluids and toxins to be trapped deep beneath the skin.

Once a fat cell has been produced, there is no way to naturally eliminate it from the body, yet, as fat cells flatten out they become unnoticeable. Women can take these proactive steps to fight cellulite both inside and out:

• Reduce fat and salt intake, avoid processed and refined foods and limit caffeine. These foods contain an abundance of toxins that can be stored in the body's fat cells.

• Proper deep breathing facilitates oxygenation of the blood and purification of the body.

• The skin, intestines and kidneys must work effectively to rid the body of toxins. Drinking plenty of water helps flush the system.

• Eat a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables and grains.

• Regular exercise will aid in reducing the size of fat cells and help increase the reliability of the connective tissue, reducing the appearance of bumps and dimpling.

• Hydrate skin while fighting cellulite by using a cellulite cream twice daily, such as Neutrogena® Cellulite Cream, which is clinically proven to improve skin's elasticity and reduce the appearance of cellulite by 50 per cent in only 12 weeks.

• Regular use of massage in problem areas will help increase circulation and assist the body in eliminating toxins.

• Use a sunless tanner to conceal cellulite as it tends to be less noticeable on darker skin.

• Learn to relax. The body functions best when there is less stress.

To effectively fight cellulite, a regimen involving regular exercise, eating a healthy balanced diet, drinking lots of water and applying a cellulite cream, twice daily is recommended.
