THE EYES HAVE IT

(NC)—Eyes are one of the most noticed features on the face, particularly because of the wide range of emotions that they convey. Eyes are also one of the first places to show the visible signs of aging — fine lines, wrinkles and brown spots. The fragile skin around the eyes is thin, particularly sensitive and easy to irritate, so avoid rubbing or tugging at it. With time, the eye contour loses muscle tone and begins to appear puffy and discolored. This summer follow these simple tips to ensure that your eyes catch that magical summer glow.

• Under eye bags or puffiness is often caused by fluid build up. To prevent eye-bags decrease salt, alcohol and caffeine intake, and participate in regular aerobic exercise to help drain unwanted fluids.

• Reduce eye puffiness by covering closed eyes with cold cucumber slices, tea bags, chilled spoons or gel-filled eye compresses for about ten minutes. The coolness provided will help constrict blood vessels and can assist in brightening tired eyes.

• Dark circles often appear when skin is less plump and tiny blood vessels under the surface become more visible. Smoking is one of the top causes for this condition, quitting will enhance your physical fitness and appearance.

• Use an eye cream regularly to soothe tired eyes, diminish wrinkles and fine lines and reduce dark circles. Eye creams are actually formulated very differently from facial moisturizers. They have a thinner, lighter consistency, and lower concentrations of active ingredients, since the thin skin isn't able to absorb very much. Using heavy face cream around eyes can cause tiny white bumps and puffiness, as pores get overwhelmed and clogged with oil. Yet this delicate skin also becomes quickly and easily dehydrated. A good one to try is RoC® Retinol A+C+E Triple Action Eye Contour, a rich eye cream that combines Vitamins A, C and E with rich draining agents.

• Reshaping your brow can give your face an instant lift. A strong arch offers a dynamic lid-lifting effect, and can make you look years younger in just a few minutes. Use an eyebrow stencil to test the brow sizes and shapes. Outline with a white eyeliner to ensure the perfect shape, tweeze all the hairs that are not highlighted.

• A good diet is also essential to the health of certain tissues, known as mucous membranes, which line the tear ducts and tear glands. A balanced diet of milk, butter, fruits, green vegetables and proteins should be followed.

• Riboflavin and vitamin B2 are necessary for visual health. Green leafy vegetables, milk, cheese, eggs, citrus fruits, bananas, tomatoes, brewer's yeast, almonds and sunflower seeds are valuable sources of this vitamin. Dull eyes and abnormal vision due to riboflavin deficiency can be found in almost any person who fails to eat these foods.
