MANNERS AROUND THE WORLD

Going to another country this year? Before traveling, check out what is considered bad manners elsewhere! 


Malaysia You should remove your shoes when entering a home or holy place.

Philippines When dining, leave some food on your plate as a sign that your host has provided you with enough food.

Southeast Asia Signs at religious landmarks, ask women not to enter if they’re menstruating.

Saudi Arabia Avoid showing the sole of your shoe to anyone.

Russia Wearing a coat and/or boots inside theatres, or similar places is unacceptable.

Chile Point with your entire hand rather than just your index finger.

Thailand Do not put your arm over the back of a chair in which someone is sitting, this is offensive.

Italy Pointing with your index and little finger is a gesture used only when wishing bad luck to someone.

Fiji To show your respect while talking to someone, place your arms folded behind your back.

Indonesia Pounding you fist into the palm of your other hand is seen as obscene.

Singapore Feet are believed to be unclean. Never touch or move anything with your feet.

Samoa Before entering a home, wait until mats have been spread on the floor.

Brazil Yawning or stretching in public is frowned on.

Switzerland Chewing gum in public is considered unacceptable.

Netherlands It is considered rude to get up during a meal to go to another room.

India A woman's upper arms are considered sensual parts of the body, and should never be exposed in public.

Turkey Ask for permission before taking a photograph of someone.

Pakistan A closed fist is considered an obscene gesture.

Mexico Putting your hands on your hips signifies that you're making a challenge to a person.

Egypt When eating, use only your right hand. The left hand is reserved for body hygiene.

Hong Kong It is considered impolite to blink at somebody.

Austria When dining in, keep your hands on the table. It is considered rude to put your hands on your lap while eating.

Zambia It is improper to point directly at someone or something.

Zimbabwe Direct eye contact with someone is considered rude.

France Do not use your fingers to eat sandwiches, you should use a knife and fork.

Kenya Never use your left hand to accept a gift.
