In
1907, Anna Jarvis, from Philadelphia began a campaign to establish a
national Mother's Day to honor all mothers. She persuaded her church
in West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May.
The following year, Mother's Day was celebrated in all of
Philadelphia.
She
and several friends wrote to ministers and politicians to establish
a national Mother's Day. In 1910, the governor of West Virginia
proclaimed the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother's Day and by 1911 every
state was celebrating it. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, made
the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national
holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
Today
Mother's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world by
children (and adults) to honor their mothers.
